Le résumé

Depuis les indépendances, le roman africain francophone circule dans un espace littéraire mondial. Sa réception dépend de médiations éditoriales et culturelles qui dépassent la simple valeur des textes. Quelle explication faut-il donner au fait que des oeuvres reconnues pour leur portée esthétique continuent, hors de leur région d’origine, d’être lues à travers des filtres qui réduisent souvent leur complexité ? Cet article examine comment le roman africain francophone contemporain est reçu, lu et interprété à travers les frontières culturelles. Il s'appuie sur un corpus de quatre oeuvres : Le Ventre de l'Atlantique de Fatou Diome, Demain j'aurai vingt ans d'Alain Mabanckou, Les 700 aveugles de Bafia de Mutt-Lon et La Déméninge de Daniel Lawson-Body. En utilisant une approche basée sur l’esthétique de la réception (H. R. Jauss) et la sociocritique du champ littéraire (P. Bourdieu, P. Casanova), l'article étudie les défis interculturels. Il s’intéresse aussi aux changements et nouvelles dynamiques de réception. Il en ressort que la réception du roman africain francophone demeure aujourd’hui conditionnée et qu’elle appelle une critique rigoureuse et plus sensible aux dynamiques actuelles d’autonomisation.

Abstract

Since the time of independence, the Francophone African novel has moved within a global literary sphere in which its reception still depends on editorial and cultural mediations that go beyond the mere value of the texts themselves. It is necessary to ask how it comes about that works acknowledged for their aesthetic importance are, outside their country of origin, interpreted through frameworks that often simplify their complexity. The present article looks at the conditions under which the contemporary Francophone African novel is received, read and interpreted across cultural boundaries, using as a basis a group of four representative novels: Le Ventre de l’Atlantique by Fatou Diome, Demain j’aurai vingt ans by Alain Mabanckou, Les 700 aveugles de Bafia by Mutt-Lon, and La Déméninge by Daniel Lawson-Body. By means of an approach grounded in the aesthetics of reception (H. R. Jauss) and in the sociocritical analysis of the literary field (P. Bourdieu, P. Casanova), the article examines the intercultural difficulties on the one hand and the changes and new dynamics of reception on the other. It becomes clear that the reception of the Francophone African novel still remains, even in today’s world, a conditioned reception and that this calls for a criticism which is both more rigorous and more sensitive to the current dynamics of empowerment.
