L’espace littéraire a souvent été appréhendé tel un contenant inoffensif, par opposition au temps, perçu comme une puissance ayant de l’emprise sur les hommes. Pourtant, l’espace est une instance redoutable qui façonne profondément les personnages. Cet article a pour objectif d’analyser la fonction de l’espace dans L’Étranger d’Albert Camus, en montrant que celui-ci ne constitue pas un banal décor narratif mais une force agissante qui conditionne les attitudes des personnages. A partir d’une approche structurale inspirée des travaux de Roland Barthes, nous explorerons trois configurations spatiales distinctes : les espaces clos, ouverts et éclatés. Cette étude aboutira à la conclusion que l’espace est une force contraignante qui configure les êtres de papier. De plus, chaque type d’espace impose des actions spécifiques tout en participant à la construction du récit.

Abstract

Literary space has often been viewed as a harmless container, in contrast to time, which is perceived as a force exerting power over people. Yet space is a formidable force that profoundly shapes fictional characters. The aim of this article is to analyse the function of space in Albert Camus’s The Stranger, demonstrating that it is not merely a mundane narrative backdrop but an active force that shapes the characters’ attitudes. Using a structural approach inspired by the work of Roland Barthes, we shall explore three distinct spatial configurations: enclosed, open and fragmented spaces. This study will conclude that space is a constraining force that shapes the fictional characters. Furthermore, each type of space dictates specific actions whilst contributing to the construction of the narrative.
